“Coach Bud did a great job,” Antetokounmpo said recently after Budenholzer’s peers again named him Coach of the Year, “just putting a great culture together, bringing a great atmosphere, making everybody have fun.” He acknowledged that part of that fun might owe to simple winning Milwaukee’s 60 regular-season victories were the most in the NBA.Īs the Bucks have emerged, the shape of Antetokounmpo’s approaching prime has started to come into focus. With Antetokounmpo stationed in the lane to wall off passes and smother shot attempts, the Bucks allowed only 104.9 points per 100 possessions-the lowest mark of any team. The defense has improved even more drastically. Milwaukee shot 1,110 more triples over the course of this regular season than they did last year, and graded out as the league’s fourth-most potent offense. The off-season addition of Brook Lopez, a 7-foot-tall center who can launch from 30 feet, typifies the approach. Where Kidd had run an offense reminiscent of the paint-by-numbers systems James suffered through early in his career, Budenholzer prioritizes putting knock-down shooters around his star. Supposed saviors can sometimes delude higher-ups into thinking that the hard part is done, that titles are only a few tweaks away.īudenholzer arrived in Milwaukee with a plan to connect the skill set of Antetokounmpo to forward-looking tactics. The New Orleans Pelicans have put a rotating cast of coaches and second fiddles around Anthony Davis, who’s now eager to leave town for a more stable and winning environment. The Cleveland Cavaliers surrounded LeBron James, during his seven-year first stint on the team, with now-forgotten fringe stars such as Mo Williams and Antawn Jamison-all brought in to provide the supposed last push to a championship-and were swept out of the only Finals they reached during that era. But after the initial euphoria of finding these players, frustrating failures in capitalizing on them often follow. Every mid-market team is looking for its version of Antetokounmpo, a young player who can lift it to a period of the sort of relevance that organizations such as the Celtics and Lakers take as a birthright. The Bucks’ management had perhaps taken a lesson from recent NBA history. The Milwaukee brass had fired the former coach, Jason Kidd, in January, and the hiring of Budenholzer, the 2015 Coach of the Year with the Atlanta Hawks, signaled a belief that there was room for more substantial growth. “That’s, like, really cool.” Antetokounmpo was coming off his second straight All-NBA season, but the Bucks had sputtered down the stretch and lost to an undermanned Boston team in the playoffs’ first round. “It was miserable coaching against him, and I’m so happy to be saying, ‘34’s on my team?’” Budenholzer gushed. When Mike Budenholzer was introduced as Milwaukee’s new head coach in May, he spoke of Antetokounmpo with excitement and relief. This year, he and the Bucks have announced that they’re ready to make good on it. In years past, despite climbing stats and All-Star accolades, Antetokounmpo remained a figure of potential. But however uncharacteristic, the celebration seemed to capture something important about the story of this season, in which Antetokounmpo has staked out a place near the top of the NBA hierarchy, and Milwaukee has opened the playoffs as the favorite to reach the Finals out of the Eastern Conference. He engages fans with such warmth that it sometimes moves them to tears. He talks regularly about all he has left to learn, having come to the sport at the relatively late age of 12. Over his six seasons, the native of Greece has earned a reputation for humility. “I’m the fucking MVP!” cameras caught him yelling as he stomped toward the courtside seats, flexing and thumping his chest. What wasn’t familiar was Antetokounmpo’s reaction.

Yet, when these resources are used up, you will gain an even bigger benefit in the form of victory points. You often build industries that actually benefit another player, giving them coal or iron or beer. In Brass: Birmingham, things are a bit more complex, as you would expect. Yet, it’s not just the usual player interaction where your actions just ruin someone else’s game. If you get it wrong, you can set up an opponent for a huge windfall that will not only give them victory points, but might actually completely ruin your own plans and effectively lose you the game – and that’s what makes this game so wonderfully exciting for me. After all, the whole game is very much about being very careful about deciding what to build where and when and in what order. In fact, when I played my third game of Brass: Birmingham, I started to play a bit more strategically, even tactically, looking for opportunities that another player created by their actions. What felt like exceptions or special circumstances becomes second nature and intuitive. In the end, like with any game, once you’ve played it once or twice, things start to flow really quickly and you’re starting to get a feeling for where your victory points come from. So, don’t be put off by the rules complexity. The very first time you play, the canal era alone will probably take as long as playing the whole game once you’re a bit more experienced. Yet, on your first game you only want to play the first era, so you can ease yourself in. It feels very overwhelming, but the game tries to help you.īrass: Birmingham is played over two eras: the canal era and the rail era. There is a lot of terminology to learn, the behaviour of the cards and industry to understand and the sheer amount of tiles on your own player mat to grapple with. It also matters what resource you produce or consume, because each one works slightly differently. There are also things like your network and whether you’re connected to something else to consider. The card you discard defines where you can build and what you can build. The turn order itself is actually relatively simple, consisting of discarding a card and taking an action, then drawing up again, and pretty most of what you do during the game is either build an industry or a network link – but the devil is in the detail of course. A large chunk of its complexity comes from the sheer number of rules. We intended to teach the third person in our group during our next online games night, so investing half an hour going over rules together seemed a very worthwhile effort.īrass: Birmingham, like its sibling Brass: Lancashire, which in turn is a reprint of the original Brass, is rules-heavy. However, one week it was just the two of us and we decided we were happy to learn the rules together and just go for it. We had spoken about playing Brass: Birmingham for a couple of weeks, but none of us had had the time to learn the rules, ready to teach the others. I felt that over the years we had tackled more and more complex games and that now we were finally ready to go up to the next level of complexity.Ĭonvincing the others actually turned out not to be too difficult, because after having moved our weekly meetings to an online world, we had discovered more games on the various platforms and were happy to try out new things, provided one of us would learn the rules. It took me a long time to pluck up the courage and suggest to my weekly games group that we should try Brass: Birmingham. When a game is celebrated as being complex, your first instinct is to be intimidated. Yet, overall you had done well and were certainly top Brass: Birmingham by Roxley Games. But then, nobody could have predicted the Industrial Revolution to be so transformative as it had been. Maybe if you had been more careful and had planned further ahead when you first started out as an entrepreneur, things would have worked out differently. Investing in the rail network would have been much more lucrative and sensible, but you had wanted to compete with your contemporaries. Looking back, building that last pottery had been foolhardy. Therefore, the next time you play a game such as Super Mario Bros. Pressing the "A" button would then record into the config file as input_a_btn = "1", so RetroArch will know that the "A" button on your physical controller corresponds to the "A" button on RetroArch's virtual controller, the RetroPad. When setting up the controller in EmulationStation, these values are then assigned a respective action on RetroArch.įor example, suppose the "A" button on a USB SNES controller has a value of "1." When setting up the controller, EmulationStation would prompt you to press the "A" button on your controller. USB gamepad.cfg input_device = "USB gamepad " input_driver = "udev" input_r_btn = "5" input_save_state_btn = "5" input_start_btn = "9" input_exit_emulator_btn = "9" input_l_btn = "4" input_load_state_btn = "4" input_up_axis = "-1" input_a_btn = "1" input_b_btn = "2" input_reset_btn = "2" input_down_axis = "+1" input_right_axis = "+0" input_state_slot_increase_axis = "+0" input_x_btn = "0" input_menu_toggle_btn = "0" input_select_btn = "8" input_enable_hotkey_btn = "8" input_y_btn = "3" input_left_axis = "-0" input_state_slot_decrease_axis = "-0"Īs seen above in the config for the USB SNES controller, each input on the controller has an associated value. Each emulator page on the wiki has a diagram of the original controller for its respective console that will correspond to the same inputs listed below.Īfter you've configured your controller the autoconfig will be created here: They can be used as a reference when configuring your controllers. The following diagrams are for the 3 most common controllers: Super Nintendo, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. You'll know if your controller has been automagically configured if you see a flash of yellow text on the bottom of the screen with your gamepad ID when you start a game. Your joypad is automagically configured for libretro (RetroArch) emulators when you configure your controller in EmulationStation. You can also access it from the start menu within EmulationStation under the Configure Input option. RetroArch controls have been integrated into EmulationStation and will be the first thing you see when you boot from the RetroPie SD image the first time. Core Input Remapping - an easy way to do specific control configurations for specific cores, made in the RetroArch RGUI.Hardcoded Configurations - made by editing retroarch.cfg file(s).Autoconfigurations - made in EmulationStation. There are 3 main ways to configure input for RetroArch: If you wish, you can reconfigure this control mapping, either for all RetroArch, for a specific system, or even for a specific ROM. The mapping for many consoles is represented by the pictures below and on each system's wiki page. If your real controller has less buttons than a DualShock, then the virtual RetroPad also has less buttons, that's perfectly fine.Īs RetroArch starts an emulator core, it maps the RetroPad configuration to the emulated system's original controls. You don't have to map all of the RetroPad buttons to a real world button. A RetroPad has an ABXY layout like a SNES controller plus four shoulder buttons and dual analog sticks like a Sony DualShock. A RetroPad does not exist in real life, it's a concept only within RetroArch. RetroArch controls map real-world controller buttons to a virtual controller called a "RetroPad". When you configure your controller in EmulationStation, the RetroPie setup script automatically configures RetroArch with the same controls. This allows a specific setting or button mapping for a certain console or even just for a certain game.įor emulators which are not libretro cores, there are emulator-specific configurations under the respective system's wiki page. However, RetroArch also provides the freedom to configure specific emulators individually and even individual games differently if the user wants. RetroArch and libretro provide ability to configure controllers once for many emulators instead of having to configure each emulator individually. For example, lr-snes9x2010 is the libretro core of the SNES emulator called snes9x2010. In RetroPie, the libretro emulator cores are identified with a lr- in front of their name. With a few simple changes to the emulator source code, almost any existing emulator could become a libretro core. RetroArch then handles the input (controls) and output (graphics and audio) while the emulator core handles the emulation of the original system. RetroArch and libretro provide a way to take an existing emulator and load that emulator as a library or "core". RetroArch is the official front end for the libretro API. On the other hand, a series of payments might be more beneficial for younger investors who want to grow wealth over time in order to have future income in retirement. Also called "immediate annuities" because their distribution, or payout, of income is almost immediate, they have very short accumulation phases as a result. This allows them to start receiving distributions that are usually guaranteed for life right away. A lump sum is more commonly chosen by investors close to or already in retirement in order to start the annuitization and payout phase as quickly as possible. Funds can come in the form of one lump sum or a series of payments, and there is precise reasoning for both methods. There are several ways this can be accomplished the most common method is to transfer funds, usually by check or bank transfer. It always comes first and begins after an initial investment is made. The accumulation phase is the first stage during which an annuity builds up cash value utilizing gathered funds. There are several phases in the life of an annuity: the accumulation, annuitization, and payout phases. In addition, some contracts offer benefits for using penalty-free withdrawals to pay for long-term care expenses. For example, the annuitants become disabled, suffer a major medical emergency, or are diagnosed with a terminal illness. Also, as retirement accounts, annuities allow early withdrawals without penalty under certain situations. Other annuity contracts may allow the withdrawal of the gains (not principal) from an annuity without penalty. Most annuity contracts allow the withdrawal of a portion of the account value each year without incurring a surrender charge. With that said, however, there are exceptions. 13, 1982, earnings are paid out before principal. Because withdrawals are taxed on a "last in, first out" (LIFO) basis for a non-qualified annuity purchased after Aug. For all types of annuities, earnings are not taxable until the money is withdrawn. Withdrawals from an annuity before the age of 59 ½ will result in a 10% early withdrawal penalty on top of regular income tax. There is no limit on the amount of non-qualified money that can be placed into an annuity or the number of annuities that can be purchased. A big distinction to make is that, unlike qualified annuities, non-qualified annuities are not subject to minimum distribution rules after the age of 72. In other words, the only portion of a non-qualified annuity policy that is eligible for taxation is the earnings, which are taxed as ordinary income. These annuities are purchased with after-tax dollars. With that said, features that are unique to annuities such as guaranteed death benefits (benefits that must be paid out to beneficiaries regardless of factors such as down markets and decreases in account value) may still be included. However, the rules of the annuity plan still govern all matters and may override certain rules. When used as a form of retirement savings, these annuities are entitled to the tax benefits and penalties of their respective plans. However, the eventual distributions during a future tax year are subject to ordinary income taxes. This means that contributions during a tax year can be deductible, lowering taxable income. Contributions to qualified annuities are generally paid with pretax money, including any investments purchased for use in a qualified retirement plan, and are not included in taxable income for the year in which they are paid. Less common qualified retirement plans include defined benefit pension plans, 403(b)s (similar to 401(k)s), Keogh Plans, Thrift Savings Plans (TSPs), and Simplified Employee Pensions (SEPs). In the U.S., a tax-qualified annuity is one used for qualified, tax-advantaged retirement plans such as an IRA or 401(k). Related Annuity Calculator | Retirement Calculator |
